About this winery
In 1864, Alfred Gratien established his cellars in the old tuffeau limestone galleries of the Saumur hillside. Originally an excavation site, stones dug from these quarries by ‘perreyeurs’ (or quarrymen) from the 12th century onwards were used to build many of the region’s important monuments (most notably the Château de Saumur). Straw yellow in colour, effervescing in streams of fine pearls. A intensive nose, fine and elegant, with shades of citrus fruit, honey and acacia conferred by the ageing on the lees (sediment). A ‘Crémant de Loire’ which is fruity, fresh and crisp on the palate. Wonderful as an aperitif, it may also accompany a variety of meals, particularly well matched with fish.
