About this winery

The success of Penfolds has been driven by the generations of visionaries and innovators. From the beginning in 1844 to today, the merging of science, art and innovation has driven Penfolds to become one of Australia’s most famed and respected winemakers. Tasting notes

Wine Allign: John Szabo- 90 points 2016v Kalimna Shiraz Bin 28 A blend of Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Upper Adelaide, and Wrattonbully. 12 months in seasoned American oak. Ripe and plummy on the nose, sweet spice. The palate is full, rich and plush, with some sweet wood caramel and loads of black fruit. Tannins are moderate and firm, but polished. Friendly. Best after 2022. 14.5% 3.64 pH. 2016 PENFOLDS Bin 28 - Nick Stock, JamesSuckling.com, November 29, 2018 “A warm, early harvest has delivered a wine with more dried, baked blackberries and plums, reflecting the DNA of Penfolds style, and a wine that makes a more savory, spicy and earthy impression than the previous 2015 release. The palate is assuredly rich and round with blackberry and dark plum-pastry flavors, layered on silky, dense and rich, ripe tannins. Long and mellow. Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Upper Adelaide, Wrattonbully fruit sourcing. Drink now or hold.” 2016 PENFOLDS Bin 28 Shiraz - Owen Bargreen, International Wine Report, November 2018 “The 'Kalimna' was first made by Penfolds in 1959, and was originally a single-vineyard wine, made from the Kalimna Vineyard in the Barossa Valley. Today it is a multi-regional blend which includes sites in the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Upper Adelaide, and Wrattonbully. This excellent warm-climate Shiraz takes on a toasty oak character on the nose, followed by black tea, blackberry pie and coffee grounds all taking shape. The mouthfeel is plush as the wine shows nice citrus tones that accompany copious dark fruits and coffee grounds which all build up to the finish. This is delicious now, but should continue to evolve nicely with additional bottle age.”
