About this winery

The success of Penfolds has been driven by the generations of visionaries and innovators. From the beginning in 1844 to today, the merging of science, art and innovation has driven Penfolds to become one of Australia’s most famed and respected winemakers. After the success of early sherries and fortified wines, founders Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold planted their vine cuttings they had carried on their voyage over to Australia. In 1844 the fledging vineyard was officially established as the...

Tasting notes

John Szabo- 94Points 2016v Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 1990 marked the 1st vintage of the Bin 407, a multi-region blend, in this case from Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully, and Padthaway. It’s aged in both French (25% new 300l) and American wood (9% new). This vintage clocks in at 14.4%, even if the aim is generally closer to 13.5%, but Gago is looking to avoid the occasionally green, or sweet-sour flavours that underripe cabernet can exhibit. The nose is engaging, offering rich, dark fruit with subtle dark chocolate accents and a touch of mint. The palate meanwhile is medium-full, surprisingly lean and firm despite the highish alcohol; tannins are, like with all Penfolds reds, polished but present, making this surely age-worthy. Best after 2020, or hold into the early ‘30s. 2016 PENFOLDS Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon- Nick Stock, JamesSuckling.com, November 29, 2018 “Youthful cabernet style here, showing plenty of blackcurrants and a tarry edge with dried plums, some raisins, mint and sweetly fragrant oak spices. The palate is very smooth and juicy. The fully ripe tannins are super fluid and open-knit, delivering a silky and approachable style. Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully, Padthaway fruit sourcing. Drink now or hold.” 2016 PENFOLDS Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon - Owen Bargreen, International Wine Report, November 2018 “The 2016 'Bin 407' Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from a host of AVAs including Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully and Padthaway and was aged for 12 months in French oak prior to bottling. The nose is quite seductive, with blackberry cobbler, brandy soaked black cherry and cigar ash notes all soaring from the glass. There is a wonderful fresh character to this rich wine, which also that reveals a gorgeous soft mouthfeel. The acidity combines nicely with rich dark fruits as this leaves a wonderful lasting impression. This should go on to age nicely, however it is already impressive at this stage.”
