The 2013 Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza Costamiòle opens to an inky-dark appearance and a deeply saturated color. The bouquet is beautifully shaped by dark-fruit nuances, including spice, toasted oak and cured tobacco. The wine is rich and thickly layered. There is a bright point of acidity that you always get with Barbera, but the wine is otherwise elaborate and thickly extracted. It offers softness and a more profound sense of dimension. This is an impressive effort.
