''The 2012 Grange falls on the fresher, lighter side in the relative context of this splendid wine, still of course a muscular and powerful Shiraz (with 2% cabernet in this vintage), yet appealingly sinewy and taut, brimming with tension and energy. I also love the savoury side, always a part of grange, but nicely pronounced here, offering a cedar, sandalwood, cigar box, fresh tobacco leaf and cold smoke inflected expression. Beneath this lies ripe blueberry fruit, blackberry compote, framed by firm, still-edgy tannins, grippy and dusty, still some years away from prime enjoyment. This will appeal to fans of more restrained and firm vintages, less opulent and immediately hedonistic than some editions, but should age extremely well and gain in complexity heading further into the appealingly savoury end of the spectrum. Best 2022-2040.''
