About this winery

The von Mandl family began their journey over 40 years ago. The first sign of the real potential of the vineyards came in 1994 with a surprise win at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London for ‘Top Chardonnay in the World.’ The family has developed exceptional vineyards with distinctive Chardonnay and Merlot clones, some of which are now over 40 years old, at what are now CheckMate Artisanal Winery vineyards.

Tasting notes

Winemaking and Foudre combine to impart aromas of Asian spice with wet stones and flint on the nose. The palate has a zesty entry, with a hint of richness and minerals followed by a lingering flavor of lychee, ginger, and spice. This is a unique, modern Chardonnay that also pays homage to the old world.

Viticultural notes

A unique reflection of its terroir and aging vessel this wine exhibits synergy, balanced acidity and the aromatics of a truly handcrafted wine.

Anthony Gismondi, April 2017

Stony, seashore, flinty aromas mark the nose with flecks of five spice and tropical notes. The palate is equally lively with bright citrus flavours with bits of ginger, mineral and sea salt. A fresh, inviting impressive white wine with a big future. Next World BC chardonnay. Fresh cracked Dungeness crab and butter would be a special match.
