About this winery

The success of Penfolds has been driven by the generations of visionaries and innovators. From the beginning in 1844 to today, the merging of science, art and innovation has driven Penfolds to become one of Australia’s most famed and respected winemakers. After the success of early sherries and fortified wines, founders Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold planted their vine cuttings they had carried on their voyage over to Australia. Tasting notes

2016 PENFOLDS Bin 128 Shiraz - Nick Stock,, November 29, 2018 “A warmer vintage, but this still delivers the peppery, savory character spectrum, in the roasting-herb and pastry zone, backed by red plums and raspberry compote. The palate is as fresh and appealing as it should be, offering raspberry and red-licorice flavors, set amid light, fine tannins that carry deceptive length and strength. Cellar-worthy elegance. Try from 2026 and for at least two decades after that.”

Viticultural notes

Bin 128 comprises fruit sourced from the unique terra rossa soils of Coonawarra, a region that exemplifies the perfume, transparency and seductive nature of cool-climate red table wines.

October 2017

''A very handy follow-up to the 2014, this has impressive depth and alluring baking spices laced into perfumed fruits that smell of blackberry, raspberry, plum and chocolate. The palate has a very alluring texture, silky, light and almost creamy. Drink now to 2025+.''

August 2018

''From the famed terra rossa soils of Coonawarra, Penfold's Bin 128 is a shining example of both (relatively) cooler climate Shiraz and of the brand's own distinctive style. More broody, complex and dark fruited than many of its regional counterparts, aromas of black cherry, blackberry, dark chocolate, vanilla and mint swirl together. Tight-grained tannins weave through the rich but not overblown flavors of dark fruit and earth. Overall, this feels very approachable now but with the capacity to age for the next seven years or so.''
