About this winery

After studying Champagne techniques in France in 1957, Wolfgang Franz Otto Blass, became the youngest person ever to graduate with a Master's in Oenology (Wine Science) from Veitschoechheim-Wuerzberg. In 1959, he moved to England to study the art of blending before moving to the Barossa Valley in 1961, deciding against a move to Venezuela which had started a revolt against its government. A mere five years later, in 1966, he established Wolf Blass Wines.

Tasting notes

Vibrant straw with fine green hues. The nose shows white peach, stone fruits and melon skin, with subtle, well-integrated oak complexity. A medium to full-bodied palate with elegant melon and peach fruit flavours continuing through from the nose. A fine acid backbone runs through the palate, with integrated oak supporting the fruit but never dominating. Extended time on lees has provided a creamy mouthfeel and further layers of complexity. The finish is long and balanced

Viticultural notes

The season began with good winter rains and an unseasonably dry spring, with flowering and fruit-set early and in rapid succession. During summer and autumn, warm days and cool nights without the characteristic autumn rain events resulted in exceptional quality fruit with fine, intense flavours and great natural acidity.

- 90 points-

James Suckling, August 2016

This strikes a neat balance between ripe white and yellow stone fruits with apple blossom, lemon citrus, toasted and hazelnuts. The palate has bold flavors in the peach and orange citrus spectrum, fresh and punchy, spiced cashew to close. A foot in each camp of tradition and modernity. Drink now.
