About this winery

Castel Frères is the historic wine trading business created by Pierre Castel with his brothers and sisters in 1949. Over time, we have created a comprehensive range including not only brand leaders and successful innovations, but also châteaux wineries and grand cru wines. Third largest in the world market, Castel Frères is today "the most important place for French wine in the world" for professionals and consumers worldwide.

Product notes

An bespoke approach tailored to the vineyard plots: 15 plots of vines, 35 years old on average, planted at 7,500 vines/ha. 100% mechanical weeding: combination of plant cover and inter-row grassing. Double Guyot pruning. Green work carried out by hand: leaf stripping, removal of the secondary fruit canes and green harvesting to control the vigour of the vines. Grapes harvested by hand, transported in small crates and received at the winery by gravity to minimize oxidation. Triple sorting: on the vine, on the cluster and optical.

Production notes

2021, a vintage of patience and demands! A start to winter marked by an alternation of cool and mild periods. In April, a historic frost episode which quantitatively reduced the harvest. A very rainy spring followed by a summer season that was slow to settle in and generally quite cool. A very nice late season in September and October, beneficial for maintaining the aromatic freshness of the grapes and a perfect acidity/alcohol balance.

Tasting notes

Intense garnet, purple reflections on the broad rim. Delicate floral notes, hints of cherries and redcurrants, and nuances of charred oak notes; an attractive bouquet. The palate is dense, full of character and shows excellent balance. The tannins are well-structured and the finish is very persistent.
